We are a 501(c)(3) Ohio-based parrot community focused on education, rehabilitation and free flight training. We also operate as a limited-capacity, foster-based rescue.
Our Philosophy
What is free flight? Free flight is the culmination of trust in your training, your bond with your parrot, and ultimately your bird’s own decision making to know what is best for them as they do what birds were made to do: fly outside with no restraints and engage in natural behaviors.
Sometimes free flight looks like A to B recalls from a perch back to your hand. Sometimes your bird wants to do a big exploratory flight high in the sky, and sometimes they decide to fly up to a tree and sit there for hours chewing on bark. All of this is free flight!
At Ohio Free Flight, we are not professionals, and our club is not a free flight course, but we are all here to support each other, learn, and grow together as bird handlers, trainers, and owners. We believe in safe, ethical free flight for both people and birds.
So where do we start? The first step is target training. Then we move onto indoor flight recalls and eventually full outdoor free flight through behavior extension and positive reinforcement.
Not every bird is going to be a free flight candidate, and that’s okay! We can still include every bird in training sessions and build up their resilience and strength. Every interaction with your bird is an opportunity to improve your trust and engage their natural behaviors.
